Google's 2015 Ambition: Developing an AI-Powered Messaging Platform

In December 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported that Google was developing an entirely new mobile messaging application designed to compete with WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and WeChat by integrating artificial intelligence chatbots directly into conversational threads.

The Concept of Conversational Search

Unlike traditional SMS or chat services, Google's proposed messenger allowed users to text friends while simultaneously querying AI chatbots capable of answering factual questions, checking weather forecasts, and retrieving web information without leaving the chat window.

The Path to Google Allo and Assistant

This initiative eventually materialized in late 2016 with the launch of Google Allo and the debut of the Google Assistant. While Allo was eventually sunset as Google unified its messaging strategy around RCS in Google Messages, the conversational AI architecture prototyped in 2015 laid the foundations for modern generative AI integrations across Google's software ecosystem.
