Microsoft's Project Natick: Testing Ocean Data Centres (2016)

In February 2016, Microsoft unveiled "Project Natick," an experimental research initiative investigating the feasibility of deploying self-contained, submerged data centres on the ocean floor to achieve sustainable cooling and lower latency for coastal populations. The 2015 Prototype Trial Microsoft tested a prototype vessel named "Leona Philpot" (referencing a character from the Xbox game series Halo) submerged one kilometre off the US Pacific coast for 105 days in 2015. The vessel operated flawlessly, demonstrating that cold seawater could provide zero-energy cooling without requiring fresh water resources. Sustainable Future Cloud Architecture Because over half the world's population resides within 200 kilometres of an ocean coastline, underwater data centres offered the potential to reduce data transmission latency while harnessing offshore renewable energy sources like tidal and wind power.

When the iPad Pro Outsold Microsoft Surface Tablets in Q4 2015

In early February 2016, market intelligence firm IDC published fourth-quarter 2015 tablet shipment data, revealing that Apple's newly introduced 12.9-inch iPad Pro had outshipped Microsoft's entire Surface detachable lineup in its debut quarter. Tablet Market Contraction vs Detachable Growth While overall worldwide tablet shipments fell 13.7 percent year-over-year in Q4 2015 to 65.9 million units, the "detachable" category (tablets paired with official keyboard accessories) achieved an all-time record of 8.1 million units. Consumers increasingly viewed detachable devices as viable productivity replacements for lightweight laptops. Head-to-Head Numbers IDC estimated that Apple shipped approximately two million iPad Pro units during Q4 2015, compared to 1.6 million Surface devices shipped by Microsoft (predominantly Surface Pro models). The data confirmed that consumers were willing to invest in premium pricing when hardware offered compelling creative and productiv...

Microsoft Apps on Google Play: Embracing the Android Ecosystem (2015)

In December 2015, Microsoft released a dedicated app called "Microsoft Apps" on the Google Play Store. Functioning as a curated directory, the application organised approximately 80 Microsoft-developed Android apps across productivity, education, communication, entertainment, and finance. The Mobile Reality for Redmond By late 2015, Windows Phone's global smartphone market share had fallen to 1.7 percent according to Gartner. Recognising the reality of the mobile platform market, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shifted the company's strategy toward a cross-platform, cloud-first service model. Promoting a Rich Mobile Portfolio Beyond flagship staples like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Skype, Microsoft Apps promoted newly acquired utilities like Wunderlist and Sunrise Calendar alongside experimental Microsoft Garage projects. The move signalled Microsoft's commitment to delivering first-class software experiences wherever users were, regardless of the underlying oper...

Microsoft Acquires Havok Physics: Fortifying Gaming and 3D Simulation (2015)

In October 2015, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Havok, the industry-leading 3D physics middleware provider, from Intel for an undisclosed sum. Havok's simulation tools had powered physics calculations in more than 600 AAA game titles, including franchise hits like Halo, Assassin's Creed, Dark Souls, and Call of Duty. Why Havok Was Crucial to Redmond Under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft was actively building out cloud computing, DirectX 12 graphics pipelines, and augmented reality platforms like the HoloLens. Integrating Havok's physics algorithms into Azure and the Xbox development ecosystem gave Microsoft powerful tools for real-time cloud physics simulation. Maintaining Platform Neutrality Crucially, Microsoft committed to keeping Havok available for licensing to all third-party game development studios across competing platforms, including Sony PlayStation and Nintendo. The acquisition reinforced Microsoft's strategy of owning foundational middleware across...
