NASA's Traffic Aware Planner: Cockpit Intelligence for Shorter Flights (2015)

In September 2015, NASA partnered with Virgin America and Alaska Airlines to conduct operational testing of a cockpit software suite known as the Traffic Aware Planner (TAP). Developed at NASA's Langley Research Center under the Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests (TASAR) initiative, TAP aimed to reduce commercial flight durations, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions.

Real-Time Dynamic Routing

Rather than relying solely on static flight plans drafted before takeoff, TAP connected directly to the aircraft's avionics hub on a standard pilot tablet. By continuously monitoring the plane's active position, altitude, remaining fuel, and flight route alongside real-time weather and restricted airspace data, the application calculated optimal altitude and route modifications mid-flight.

Preventing Air Traffic Conflicts

Crucially, TAP integrated automatic scanning of nearby aircraft transponders to ensure proposed flight path adjustments would not create airspace conflicts. This automated safety validation allowed air traffic controllers to approve pilot-requested route shortcuts much faster. NASA flight simulations demonstrated that shaving even four minutes off a routine flight leg produced substantial fleet-wide economic and environmental savings.
