Micromax's 4G Triple Launch: Canvas Blaze, Fire, and Play (2015)
In late September 2015, Indian smartphone manufacturer Micromax unveiled three budget-friendly 4G LTE devices: the Canvas Blaze 4G, Canvas Fire 4G, and Canvas Play 4G. To boost adoption across tier-2 and tier-3 Indian markets, Micromax partnered with telecom operator Airtel to offer a six-month double-data promotion on all 4G handsets in the lineup.
Comparing the Canvas Trio
| Model | Display | Processor | Camera | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canvas Blaze 4G | 4.5-inch FWVGA | 1.1 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 210 | 5 MP rear / 2 MP front | 2,000 mAh |
| Canvas Fire 4G | 4.5-inch FWVGA | 1.0 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735M | 8 MP rear / 2 MP front | 1,850 mAh |
| Canvas Play 4G | 5.5-inch HD IPS | 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon | 13 MP rear / 5 MP front | 2,820 mAh |
The Indian 4G Transition
All three models ran Android 5.1 Lollipop and featured dual-SIM connectivity. At the time of launch, Indian carriers were investing heavily in LTE infrastructure, and domestic manufacturers like Micromax sought to capture first-time 4G smartphone buyers before international competitors established dominant market share.
