Huge loophole in iOS 9 bypasses lock screen to grant access to contacts and photos

You’ll never guess the accomplice that enables unauthorized user access on iOS 9 devices. She lives within the system itself.

A potentially massive loophole has been uncovered in the iOS 9 device lock screen, enabling access a user’s contacts and photos without ever having to enter the correct PIN.
In a YouTube video posted by an individual called Jose Rodriguez, he goes through the motions of demonstrating how this can be done by recruiting none other than Apple’s own built-in voice assistant Siri.
Here’s how it appears to work: after entering an incorrect PIN several times, he launches Siri from the lock screen, then simply asks what time it is. When the results show up, there’s a search field at the top of the screen from which he proceeds to further search for information from areas of the iPhone such as the Contacts, Messages and Photos. All of this without ever leaving the lock screen.
It is clear this is a significant loophole that is likely to be addressed by Apple shortly, but in the meanwhile it appears that several areas of the device containing personal information in iOS 9 are open to access.
This flaw only adds to the prevalent issues that have cropped up since iOS 9 was launched recently. In the interim, one recommended method to prevent unauthorised access using this method is to simply disable Siri access on the lock screen.

Facebook Adds 360-Degree Video to News Feed...

Facebook on Wednesday began rolling out 360-degree viewing at the leading social network, letting people change their perspectives in specially created videos.

We've seen that people enjoy more immersive content in their News Feeds," video engineering director Maher Saba said in a blog post.
"We're excited to take it a step further with 360-degree video."
Synched rings cameras are used to capture video in a way that lets viewers virtually look around as if they are in the middle of a scene.
In desktop computer browsers, changing angles can be done using on-screen cursors. On mobile devices, shifting perspectives can be done by dragging fingers or just turning handsets, according to Saba.
"You'll be able to hold up your phone and the 360-degree video will follow you as you turn, looking around, to experience things from all over the world like never before," Saba said.
Publishers sharing 360-degree video at launch included GoPro, Discovery, and Saturday Night Live, according toFacebook.
Disney and Lucasfilm will debut a 360-degree video focused on its upcoming film "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Saba said.
The immersive new feature being added to News Feed was being rolled out to Web browser and mobile devices powered by Google-backedAndroid operating systems. Facebook planned to get it onto hardware powered by Apple iOS software "in the coming months."

Nasa's New App Will Help Airlines Shorten Flight Times

Two US airlines will soon begin testing a new Nasa-developed software that is designed to help air carriers save time, cut fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

During the next three years, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines will use the Traffic Aware Planner (TAP) application to make "traffic aware strategic aircrew requests" (TASAR), the US space agency said in a statement.
TAP connects directly to the aircraft avionics information hub on the aircraft.
"It reads the current position and altitude of the aircraft, its flight route and other real-time information that defines the plane's current situation and active flight plan," explained David Wing, TASAR project lead at Nasa's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.
Then, it automatically looks for a variety of route and/or altitude changes that could save fuel or flight time and displays those solutions directly to the flight crew.
TAP also scans the signals of nearby air traffic to avoid potential conflicts in any proposed flight path changes, making it easier for air traffic controllers to approve a pilot's route change request.
For airlines with internet connectivity in the cockpit, TAP also can access information such as real-time weather conditions, wind forecast updates and restricted airspace status to further increase flight efficiency.
The software is loaded onto a tablet computer, which many airline pilots already use for charts and flight calculations.
Even four minutes of flight time shaved off of each leg of a trip made by an airline could result in massive fuel and time savings, according to researchers.
The software provided similar results in flight tests. A second round of flight tests was recently completed to ensure readiness for operational use by partner airlines.
"We are excited to partner with Nasa to test this new technology that has the potential to help reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions and save our guests time in the air," commented Steve Forte, Virgin America's chief operating officer in Burlingame, California.
Developers say the new technology will not require changes to the roles and responsibilities of pilots or air traffic controllers.

13-year-old Odisha girl wins Google Science Fair award

NEW DELHI: A 13-year-old student from Odisha, Sripada Srisai Lalita Prasida, has won the Community Impact Award at the Google Science Fair in the 13-15 years age category for developing a water purifier that works using waste corn cobs.

Prasida, who studies in class 9 at DPS Damanjodi in Odisha's Koratpur district, was awarded $10,000 as prize money and will be mentored by Google to build the project.
As part of the project, Prasida used waste corn cobs in order to clean purify water from domestic as well as industrial wastes by applying the principle of adsorption.
In her experiment, Prasida found that waste corn cobs are able to adsorb contaminants like salt oxides, detergent, suspended particles, coloured dyes, oil, grease and even some heavy metals.
About the applications of this novel method of water purification, Prasida's page on the Google Science Fair website says:
"If the drain pipe of household is connected to a chamber having different layers of corn cobs in partition layers or to an S-trap pipe having corn cobs, it will separate about more than 70-80 % of contaminants including suspended particles from the waste water. Similarly, the factory outlet pipes carrying effluents must be opened to five inter-connected chambers having long slices of corn cobs, pieces of corn cobs, powder of corn cobs, activated charcoal of corn cobs and fine sand for the easy adsorption of TSS and chemical toxicants, both organic and inorganic."
Prasida also says that corn cobs can be used to clean water bodies like ponds and rivers, along with tanks. The website says, "Corn cobs fitted to bamboos buried on the ground floor of the ponds and allowed two to three weeks to stand can be useful for cleaning of water in ponds, tanks and rivers. This is also useful to clean overhead water tanks of individual households and community tanks."
While corn cobs are widely available as an agriculture biowaste, Prasida says more chemical and physical examinations are needed for their commercialization for water purification.
Prasida's interest in science was sparked by her encounter with a tribal farmer who informed her about the low utilization of corn cobs. This began her journey to find out more ways to use waste corn cobs.
She also says that she plans to pursue a career in agriculture studies.
